Our House San Antonio
| Last updated on February 19, 2013 |
Our House believes that recovery from mental illness is achieved by offering opportunities for people to develop meaningful relationships and to discover rewarding work. We believe that people with mental illness should have the right to the same opportunities as the rest of society.
Description:
Our mission is to provide opportunities to our clients (referred to as “members”) for meaningful relationships and meaningful work. We believe that recovery from mental illness is achieved by offering a safe place where our members can regain what was taken from them by their illness – their dignity and self-worth. The program builds self-esteem and life skills in its members through a work-centered day, emphasizing their abilities rather than their disabilities. This model has been proven through decades of evidence (through the International Clubhouse model) to rehabilitate adults, reducing mental health hospitalizations, improving quality of life, and helping members return to a productive role in society.
History:
Our House was founded in 2002 as a grassroots organization by family members of people with severe and persistent mental illness. For the first four years of our existence, we provided our services at Travis Park United Methodist Church. In late 2007, we moved into our current location, a historic home located at 1530 N. Alamo St.
