Willis Dady Emergency Shelter's mission is to provide immediate shelter to homeless single men and families in a safe, clean, and caring atmosphere, which promotes progress toward ending the cycle of homelessness.

Description:
Willis Dady Emergency Shelter serves homeless single men and families the Linn County area. We provide clients with needs, such as, clothing, personal hygiene items, bedding, laundry facilities, food, transportation, and case management services. Through meeting basic needs, direction to appropriate community services, and a safe living environment, we provide the space for residents to move their focus from survival to self sufficiency.

History:
The shelter has been in operation since 1987. It was named after a young homeless man, Willis Dady, who drowned in the Des Moines River while attempting to rescue a child. Willis Dady was awarded the Presidential Citizen's Award, post death, for his heroic rescue. This is the highest award that a citizen of the U.S. can receive. Willis Dady Emergency Shelter has served over 10,000 clients from over 30 different countries. In 2009 we sheltered over 400 single men and family members. In August 2009, Willis Dady was awarded an I-Jobs Public Shelter Service Grant of $300,000.
