The mission of Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence is to provide compassionate care and assistance that seeks to meet the physical , emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of our seniors.

Description:
Carter-May Home/St. Joseph Residence is a Non-profit Assisted Living Facility for senior adults age 60 and older. Services provided include assistance with personal care needs, medication assistance, meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and recreational activities. Residents are encouraged to continue an active lifestyle with the wellness club, craft class, card and visit outreach, gardening, and field trips.

History:
Carter-May Home was founded in 1929 by the Cathedral Benevolent Society and originally called the "Catholic Women's Home". It has changed over the years and is now operated as an Assisted Living Facility under the sponsorship of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Charleston. The facility has the capacity for 25 residents and welcomes seniors of all races and creeds.

Directions:

 From downtown Charleston, take St. Andrew's Blvd into West Ashley. Follow this to 171 or Old Towne Road which vears off to the the right from St. Andrew's Blvd. Follow 171 to Donahue Road which is the first light after Charlestowne Landing State Park. Turn right on to Donahue and then make an immediate left on to Ingram Road. We are at 1660 Ingram Road.

General information about volunteer opportunities
Volunteers are needed for the following:
field trip assistance, craft class, BINGO, sharing a musical talent, bridge, one-on-one visits, outdoor walking group, gardening, landscaping, bible study, and cooking class
Training/orientation
The Activities Director reviews Resident's Rights and Confidentiality. She also works along with the volunteer for 2-3 sessions with the residents.

Volunteer requirements
Background screening is required on individual volunteers that have direct contact with residents.
