Domestic Violence Crisis Center
| Last updated on December 29, 2011 |
DVCC is committed to promoting the fundamental right for all individuals to be safe in their personal relationships.
Description:
Volunteers are an integral part of the DVCC’s effort to serve victims of domestic violence. While volunteer projects and departmental needs are always evolving, the role that volunteers play in our agency is an ongoing and essential one.
Because of the sensitive nature of the work and the need for confidentiality, all prospective volunteers must attend a 30-hour Educational Seminar. This seminar provides an opportunity to learn about the dynamics of intimate partner violence and how it affects victims, families, children and society at large. Participants also learn about agency services and advocacy projects. Upon completion of the Educational Seminar, volunteers are certified by the State of Connecticut and may assist with community events and outreach, administrative work, fundraising and childcare.
Volunteers who would like to work with specific agency services (the legal department, SafeHouses, Medical Advocacy Project, PeaceWorks Project or the 24-hour Hotline) receive further specialized training in those areas.
Certified volunteers receive ongoing supervision and are required to complete 48 hours of service or 17 Hotline shifts each year. In order for volunteers to maintain their certification, they must complete six additional hours of education annually.
Educational Seminars occur twice a year, typically in the fall and spring. There is a one-time fee of $150 for the seminar. Need-based scholarships are available.
For more information on volunteering or for a schedule of upcoming Educational Seminars, email volunteer@dvccct.org or call (203) 588-9100 and ask for the Volunteer Liaison.
History:
Prior to 1997, the DVCC was two separate agencies, the Women's Crisis Center in Norwalk, and Domestic Violence Services in Stamford. The Norwalk shelter was opened in 1987, while the Stamford shelter opened in 1988. In 1998 the two organizations legally merged into one, the Domestic Violence Crisis Center.
