Agency Details:

Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center
Last updated on May 31, 2013

Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center is a faith based community center that serves low income youth in Biddeford by offering year round out of school time programming for youth 7-17.

We welcome youth of all backgrounds and abilities and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.

Our Mission statement: As a reflection of our love for Jesus Christ, Joyful Harvest offers a safe place where children and teens discover and share support, love, stability and hope.

The Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center has served the children and youth of the Bacon Street neighborhood in Biddeford since 1999; due to an increase in participants, in 2012 we relocated to Main Street to better serve area youth. We offer year round, no cost programming to area families, our two primary programs are the after-school program and the summer program. During the school year we are open Mon-Thur 2:30-5:00 for youth 7-17. Many of the children and teens we serve are challenged by economic, personal, or difficult family circumstances.

In addition to our core programming, we partner with agencies such as the Art Van and Girl Scouts for evening programming for youth as well.

In addition to weekly programming we offer special programs such as the Annual Kid's Shopping and Pancake Event that is always held the Saturday before Christmas. We also partner with several agencies in late summer to supply school supplies to area kids in need.

Joyful Harvest Neighborhood Center was initially a seed church of the American Baptist Church founded in 1995 in the Bacon Street community of Biddeford Maine. The Rev Laura Holt-Haslam was the first pastor and founder of Joyful Harvest, with a calling to work with the poor and broken of the city.

By the fall of 1999, it became apparent that both the church and community outreach were not viable and the decision was made to restructure as a Christian community center ministering to the needy.
In 2001 Joyful Harvest reincorporated as a Neighborhood Center and became a 501(c)3 organization. At that time we also took Stone Soup, a local food pantry, under our wing. For the next two years we grew and provided many services to the community. The two strongest activities were the food pantry which was Stone Soup and activities for children after-school and in the summer.
In May of 2003, we refocused our efforts and went from being one agency to two with the Stone Soup food pantry staying on Bacon St and Joyful Harvest moving to Water St where we focused on children’s programs during the after-school hours. From 2003-2011, Joyful Harvest saw substantial growth as the agency moved into a 5 day a week year round program open 46 weeks out of the year and moving from one staffed position and volunteers to hiring two employees to assist the director and volunteers.

In 2011 the board of directors voted to move from the Bacon Street community to a more central location on Main Street that tripled the size of the center and allowed better access to all youth in Biddeford.
