2015: SUMMER FUN & LEARNING: HOPE Summer Camp

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 6, 2014

SUMMER 2015: HOPE Summer Camp operates at Camp Collier in Gardner which is a perfect setting for the campers that might not otherwise have a safe and enjoyable summer. In addition to a full day of recreational activities, campers entering grades 3-6 that need an extra academic boost to prepare for school in the fall work have the benefit of receiving one-on-one tutoring each day. We need volunteer tutor/mentors to work with children from 9:45-12:45, Monday-Friday in one of the two-week sessions operating in late June to mid-August. Exact dates to be announced in March 2015. Please get in touch for more information in mid-April to mid-June of 2015.

The tutoring environment is relaxed, with many campers and tutors sitting by the lake to work together. Others work in the dining lodge that has a lake view. Tutors work with the same 3 campers for the two weeks which gives tutors the opportunity to see the campers make progress. THE MENTOR ROLE IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF EVERY HOPE PROGRAM\. Mentors are caring adults that offer support and encouragement and positive role modeling to children.

Volunteers need to be 17 or older and able to make a two week commitment. Excellent communication skills and ability to provide positive role modeling, knowledge of elementary basic Math and English competencies are needed for tutors. Campers work on reading skills, book report completion and basic math skills for grades 3-6. Individuals with an educational background are most welcome!
Volunteers must attend a volunteer training held during the last week of June.
