Volunteer Opportunity - Tutor English to Chinese Immigrants Education Older Adults

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 9, 2012

Volunteer tutors needed to teach English to adult immigrants in Chinatown.

Our volunteers do not have to speak Chinese or have prior tutoring experience (we provide training). Our only language requirement for tutors is fluent English. Tutors need to be able to make a commitment of 2 hours per week at a consistent time every week, for at least a 6-month period after the training. You can choose to work one on one or in the classroom. Tutoring is scheduled at a time and place convenient to both tutors and tutees. Most sessions take place at our agency in Chinatown or at a public location such as a library.

Training is provided by the program and is required for volunteers without previous English tutor or teacher training. The orientation is set on Wednesdays, July 25th, 2012 from 6:15-8:45pm, followed by 5-weekly trainings on consecutive Wednesdays from 6:15-8:45pm.

The training includes orientation to the adult education program and student population, discussion of cultural and language differences, and information on a variety of language teaching methods, and specific tutoring techniques.

Follow-up consists of periodic emails with the tutor coordinator, and support over the phone or in person whenever necessary.
