Volunteer Opportunity - D.O.C. Seeking Licensed Cosmetologist Health

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 21, 2014

MCI-F is seeking a licensed cosmetologist who is interested to volunteer in the Cosmetology class/salon offered through the DOC Education and Training Division at MCI-Framingham. MCI-F is a medium security correctional facility for female offenders, located in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is noted as the oldest female correctional institution in operation in the United States. In addition to meeting the security needs of a medium security facility, MCI-Framingham provides numerous program and treatment opportunities including mental health, medical, substance abuse, and family services, as well as educational, vocational, library, religious, recreation, and community service programs. The class is a 12-member Cosmetology class, similar to the Blaine or a Voc-Tech high school course. The class covers all aspects of hair/skin/nails needed to pass the Mass. State Licensing Exam, which is given here at MCIF once yearly. The volunteer would assist dispensing the product which needs careful monitoring and with general supervision under direction of the Cosmetology Instructor.

Volunteers will be required to attend an orientation program that will provide an understanding of the rules, responsibilities, and standard procedures of required conduct for all individuals who enter the correctional institution.

4 Overall Experience    Experience rating
Volunteering in the prisons has been inspiring and has deepened my spiritual llife enormously.
The Alternatives to Violence Project workshops provide experiential community building and skills in communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution. In facilitating these workshops for the last 15 years, I have profoundly experienced the power of individuals to overcome years of isolation, distrust and fear to build a community based on respect and caring. I now direct a small non-profit dedicated to bringing volunteers into the prisons and to being a voice for prisoners outside the wall.
