United South End Settlements
|Last updated on May 12, 2015|
United South End Settlements (USES) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving children, teens, adults, and seniors through programs in art, education, technology, and social services. USES has held true to its settlement house roots, committing to the motto of “neighbors helping neighbors to grow and thrive.” Our extended family is an integrated team of participants, staff, volunteers, community leaders, and business partners. USES operates in three locations in the South End – Harriet Tubman House, South End House, the Children’s Art Centre – and Camp Hale on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Please visit our website at www.uses.org.
USES provides many opportunities for volunteers and interns to give back to the South End community. Volunteers work in groups or individually, come for personal growth or academic credit, serve for a day or a school year. Volunteer opportunities exist in all departments from Early Childhood Education to Senior Services, and from the Business Office to Facilities and Maintenance. USES accepts interns and volunteers year round for tutoring youth or adults, assisting with administrative tasks, art making with children, grant writing and development, planning community events, serving lunch to seniors, and many other activities.
Volunteers are essential to the everyday success of USES programs, making a difference in the community we serve. As a volunteer or intern at USES you will: meet new people; develop important networking contacts; explore career and personal interests; make a difference in someone’s life; earn recommendations for future employment or college applications; develop marketable job skills; build your resume; and, enrich your education.
In the late 1800s, immigrants who came to our country to find a better life often faced horrific living conditions in poor urban neighborhoods. By establishing settlement houses, caring citizens helped ease their plight and shape new lives. The approach was unique — to absorb newcomers into neighborhoods enriched by all cultures, income levels and walks of life. United South End Settlements (USES) was incorporated in 1960 with the merger of five Boston settlement houses which were established in the South End in the 1890s. Today USES is a testament to this forward thinking, evolving over the decades to offer a broad array of programs for people of all ages to learn, socialize and experience the rich culture of the extraordinary city of Boston.
