Cambridge Community Services (CCS), established in 1938, is a private non-profit community-based organization. Its mission is to identify human service needs in Cambridge, and to develop innovative strategies and programs that can be instituted as ongoing resources in this and other communities. The agency’s current emphasis is on youth development.
Description:
CCS accomplishes its mission by employing two strategic approaches: 1) the development and implementation of innovative direct service programs for youth, and 2) the provision of capacity-building technical assistance for other community-based organizations. All CCS initiatives are launched through an inclusive planning process that involves key stakeholders, constituents, and community collaborators. Once implemented, every program is evaluated and refined, and curriculum and best practices are documented. After several years of operation, successful projects are “spun-off” to collaborating institutions to be sustained as ongoing community resources. CCS then goes on to address new and emerging needs, and to assist other communities to replicate successful program approaches.
History:
Cambridge’s urban setting is home to a large population of youth and families that are low-income. Many of these families are headed by single parents, and/or have recently arrived as immigrants and refugees. Each day, they must negotiate a complex set of economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic barriers. For adolescents in these families, the availability of supportive services in the community is of critical importance. CCS addresses this need through a variety of comprehensive programs and services that are designed to offer young people individual guidance from caring adults, intensive academic assistance, exposure to a wide variety of career options, and access to higher education opportunities.
