Newton Community Service Center
| Last updated on March 18, 2013 |
The Newton Community Service Center (NCSC) concentrates on building the early relationships with nurturing adults that children need to develop in healthy ways.
Description:
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES NCSC's programs, led by passionate professionals produce these outcomes: stronger family attachments; increased early literacy and improved language skills; improved parenting skills for new and young parents. NCSC's four distinct, well-integrated program areas include: early education and child care; family counseling, education and support; child abuse prevention; volunteer service opportunities for adults 55+. We have developed an ability to foster the type of nurturing parent/child and teacher/student relationships that enhance childhood development. For more than twenty years, we have also conducted educational programs that focus on children's personal safety. Through our SOAR55 program, we engage and train older adults to provide our community with valuable volunteer services.
History:
Since 1907. NCSC has served the diverse needs of children and families from Newton, Waltham and surrounding communities with educational programs and a network of support services Founded in 1907 as a forward-thinking day nursery for the children of local laborers, NCSC has become an integral part of the community and a safety net for thousands of families each year. In our first century of developing and promoting innovative community support services, NCSC has taken an active role in such institutions as full-day child care; a baby clinic; a youth center, domestic skills and recreation programs; two women’s clubs; the All Newton Music School; the Newton Job Bank; the Newton Senior Citizens Committee; an adult day care center; and a senior volunteer program, RSVP, now known as SOAR 55. As we prepare for our next 100 years, we find our social services are more critical than ever. More people, from diverse economic and social backgrounds, seek care or support for a loved one through early childhood education and family support and guidance. While demand for support services is rising, state and federal funds are shrinking. With a commitment to a model of caring and community service, NCSC’s board and staff are dedicated to providing programs and services to fill community needs of today and tomorrow.
