"The Arc will lead in forging a society that values, respects, includes and recognizes the contribution of community members with disabilities."
Description:
The United Arc currently provides an array of flexible family supports, parenting education, transition services for teens, and community-based living options for adults. Advocacy is key to the Arc's mission. The United Arc sponsors two self-advocacy groups, offers educational and service consultation and advocacy and partners with state and national organizations on legislative and systems advocacy. The United Arc is an affiliated chapter of the Arc of Massachusetts an the Arc of the United States. Our active membership and volunteers work with staff to further the mission of the organization.
History:
The United Arc of Franklin and Hampshire Counties was founded in 1951 as a grassroots volunteer organization by concerned family members and advocates who sought community supports rather than institutionalization for children with mental retardation. Over the past 60 years the Arc has developed into a professional organization with a wide range of services focusing on advocacy and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in western Massachusetts.
