Sociedad Latina
Last updated on January 7, 2015

Founded in 1968, Sociedad Latina works in partnership with youth and families to create the next generation of Latino leaders who are confident, competent, successful and proud of their Latino heritage.

Sociedad Latina has been recognized by Boston Public Schools, the world-renowned hospitals of the Longwood Medical Area, the National Council of La Raza and countless other organizations as a standard-bearer for developing innovative and effective programs that produce positive outcomes for Latino youth and their families.

Boston's Latino youth face significant barriers to success, but they also have important assets including strong cultural traditions and supportive families. Sociedad Latina’s programs build on these assets to give youth the training they need to reach their goals. Our model has proven successful – for each of the last 3 years, 100% of our seniors have been accepted to college!

In designing our innovative programs, we incorporate cutting-edge research, evaluation results and the suggestions of our youth and families. Our youth development model provides high-quality, culturally proficient academic and enrichment programs for youth ages 11-21 by building skills in four key areas:

Education - Our educational enrichment programs focus on engaging youth in educational attainment and providing access to higher education.

Workforce Development - Our skill building programs focus on building youth skills to increase employment readiness as well as providing youth with opportunities for career exploration.

Civic Engagement - Our leadership programming places emphasis on building community leadership so that youth and adults have the capacity to identify, take action and solve problems in their own community.

Arts & Culture - Our cultural programs, a cornerstone of all our work, provide opportunities for youth to explore culture(s) through literature, dance, music, film, discussion, theater and arts.

Sociedad Latina was founded in 1968 to create a welcoming space for Latinos to gather and find fellowship. Originally focused on providing social and recreational activities for young people, Sociedad Latina has grown into an organization providing a comprehensive, community-responsive array of programs designed to empower Latino youth and their families.

Today, we focus our resources on responding to the needs of Boston Public School students and their families who live at or below the poverty line, particularly Latino youth and residents of Mission Hill/Roxbury. In 2012, more than 325 youth participated in our youth development programs and we reached more than 2,000 community members through events and workshops.
