Tabor's mission is to rebuild communities by helping families find housing and financial solutions. Tabor's vision is to rebuild communities by serving as the recognized, premier housing and budget counseling organization in central Pennsylvania.
Description:
Tabor has three service areas: Financial & Homeownership Services, Homeless & Rental Counseling and Supportive Housing. Each year Tabor serves families on over 4,000 cases concerning financial and housing difficulties. Tabor counselors teach skills and disciplines that empower clients to become productive, responsible members of our community. For 40 years, Tabor has helped thousands of Lancaster City and County families achieve financial stability and solve their housing problems. Lancaster families have come to Tabor for help and counsel to:
- break the cycle of homelessness
- keep their homes by avoiding foreclosure
- acquire the economic skills to become able to pay bills on time
- move off rental assistance
- purchase their first home
- gain self-sufficiency
- receive financial counseling and debt management
- start a savings account
The East King Improvement District is a collaborative effort, led by Tabor, including: the Housing Development Corporation of Lancaster, SACA Development Corporation, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the Inner City Group and the Lancaster Alliance. The district extends from Penn Square to Broad Street, with an end goal of a more livable neighborhood.
History:
Since 1968, Tabor Community services has helped families find housing and financial solutions. The founder of Tabor, A. Grace Wenger, along with her colleagues developed a vision to help low-income families and minorities find affordable housing. Since that time Tabor has steadily offered a wider and more comprehensive array of housing and financial counseling services in Lancaster, PA. Tabor became a HUD approved counseling agency in 1971, a member of the National Foundation for Consumer Credit in 1988, and accredited through the Council on Accreditation in 1998. Tabor was named National Foundation for Consumer Credit National Pace Award Winner – 2001 Agency of the Year.
