PAWS & More Animal Shelter is a private, open admissions adoption guarantee shelter located in Washington, Iowa. “PAWS” stands for “Providing Animals with Shelter”, while “More” stands for the loving care and treatment we give to every animal who passes through our doors. We provide humane care to all animals needing protection, seek suitable homes for animals without owners and provide euthanasia when only medically or behaviorally necessary.

Description:
The shelter takes in, on average, 800 animals each year. Housing at the shelter is limited to approximately 120 cats and 25 dogs. Not only does PAWS provide homes for stray pets and unite lost pets with their owners, we educate the public who have questions on pet care, we assist law enforcement with neglect cases, citizen complaints and family emergency issues. We also give tours and offer youth humane education classes and visit care facilities with our “therapy” pets. PAWS, also actively engages in grant sponsored Trap/neuter release programs and has spayed and neutered approx 70 feral cats with in the city of Washington.

History:
PAWS & More is a non-profit shelter. We have been an organization since 1978. The shelter’s staff comprises one full-time and five part-time employees. The remaining work is done by volunteers. PAWS is governed by a board of five directors. We also have a network of volunteers and supporters who assist in providing Foster Care, Transports, Fundraising and handle the direct care at our satellite locations at Pet-Co stores.
