Project GEM
Project G.E.M. (Growth, Experience, Motivation) is a non profit out reach education based program that works with special needs youth through cultural, environmental, and holistic/social education to assist in the development of creative self-expression & self-growth using the arts. The goal is to educate youth in the community to enrich their lives.
Description:
Direct Services and Recipients: Work with low income/special needs youth ages 8 - 17 years old within these counties: Counties are: Blue Earth, Brown, Martin and Nicollet. The program is not offering services during the summer but will start up again in September. The after school art classes will be available in Mankato, St. Peter and Fairmont for the 09-10 year. The in-class ed. assistance will be be available in New Ulm, Mankato and St. Peter the 09-10 year.
Requirements and/or restrictions of service:
- Must have available transportation for all location sites.
- There are service learning training meetings all participants need to attend before starting any volunteer or service-learning hours through the program. Please check back for those date listings in mid August.
- Students are required to attend a training meeting for setup to sites and events.
History:
Project GEM as been involved with the service-learning placement for colleges students since 1996. It has served well over 700 college students and totaled over 7,500 hours of volunteer and service-learning time. Some college students have gone on to teach in the program and also use the program as a job reference.
