Agency - Pioneer Museum of Bozeman

The purpose of this society shall be to preserve and make accessible for study and research the history of the (Gallatin) County through the gathering, study and organizing of available information such as letters, stories, interviews, newspaper or other written reports, photographic images and memorabilia or artifacts. The term history shall be interpreted broadly, meaning information relating to the entire county since prehistoric times through the present, its relation to other parts of the state and nation, its geography, climate, archeology, its people, industries, important episodes in its development, its major settlements, canyons, historic sites and related information.

Description:
The museum welcomes over eight thousand annual visitors from all states and many foreign countries. Among the permanent pioneer displays are an exhibit on the town’s namesake, John M. Bozeman, a reconstructed pioneer cabin that depicts nineteenth century living conditions, and early-day farm and ranch implements. Permanent Indian displays reveal much of the heritage of the Crow and Sioux Tribes: a bandoleer, single-train feather bonnet, parfleche, beaded saddlebags, and moccasins. Military exhibits feature old Army uniforms, a cannon, musketry, a scale model of erstwhile military post Fort Ellis, and a silver tea set used by an officer’s wife.

History:
The organization was found in 1977, and through the years has helped install historic signs in Gallatin County, sponsored essays and field trips, and publishes books and magazines dealing with the history of Gallatin County & southwest Montana.
