We believe that: -Youth can be responsible, contributing members to their community. -Youth gain valuable experience and knowledge in the employment process. -Youth overcome barriers to employment when the playing field is leveled through skill-building, education, partnership, and increased opportunity. -Employers need a trusted source of job-ready workers. -Youth need help in finding a job and starting a career. -Work has the power to shape futures and change lives.
Description:
To meet community needs, the YJC has created a variety of programs that offer a broad array of services to young people in Chicago, Evanston, and surrounding suburbs. All of our youth employment programs include the following services:
- Employment related guidance and counseling
- Job-readiness, life skills and basic computer training
- Post-employment follow-up support
History:
Since 1983, the Youth Job Center of Evanston has been a mainstay of employment-related services for disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Evanston and Chicago. Our mission: To prepare youth ages 14-25 for success in the workplace. We provide job readiness, placement, and employment support in partnership with employers. The vast majority of the clients that visit the YJC are faced with economic, educational, or social barriers: 75% are low-income, 82% are minority, 15% are single-parents or have a criminal background, some have a history of drug dependency, and many lack base skills or work experience that impact their employability. While these factors lead much of the business community to view these youth as unemployable, the YJC was founded on the belief that this population is an undeveloped asset and an important resource to help solidify the community. The YJC provides employment related guidance, counseling and placement for more than 1,300 youth annually. We don't only help young people secure jobs; we give them the opportunity to make meaningful progress toward self-sufficiency. Throughout its 27 years of service to the community, the YJC has provided free programs to more than 23,000 youth. The YJC staff understands that young people can be responsible, contributing members of their community if given the proper training and support. The experience and expertise that the YJC staff offers has helped to ensure a stronger and more secure future for generations in our community.
