SAFE in Northern Michigan

SAFE (a coalition of area agencies, schools, and individuals) exists to promote community awareness of youth substance abuse and participation in prevention. Projects include The Napkin Project, providing napkins with a substance-abuse-free message to school concession stands, and the Sheriff's Mailing, letters to all junior and senior students' parents during the prom and graduation season with information on Social Host laws and ways to have a safe party. SAFE Youth, made up of high school students from Charlevoix and Emmet counties, bring prevention efforts right into the schools through projects like The Varsity Poster Project, featuring substance abuse free student leaders in posters for local middle schools, holiday reminders to stay SAFE, retailer education, homecoming and prom initiatives focusing on fun, safe, and substance abuse free celebrations and more. The Coalition also sponsors substance abuse free dances. With multiple prevention projects a year, SAFE has lots of important tasks, like chaperoning dances, "ticketing" cars at Homecoming games, and making connections with local schools.

SAFE is especially active during the school year, September through June, but these volunteer opportunities are more of an "as-needed" commitment.
