Girls Coach for Spring 2010
Girls on the Run of Emmet and Charlevoix Counties, Inc.
Being a coach for a group of 16 Girls on the Run participants, can be similar to herding a pack of kittens. They have tons of energy, lots to say, and like to do it all at once. It is an extremely rewarding endeavor. The coach leads the discussions, and encourages the girls. But really, you show them how to see their own value. Many times in the process, the coaches learn their value as a person, too.
The season is 10 weeks long of 2 sessions a week starting the beginning of March and going through mid-May. During that time, you teach the girls (through the Girls on the Run curriculum) what being healthy looks like, feels like and how to make healthy choices (food, friends, physical, emotional, etc) At the end of the 10 weeks all of the girls from Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and Boyne City participate in a 5k. After the 5k each group has their own awards celebration where the coach gives an award to each girl.
The requirement for coaching is to complete a 4 hour training session prior to the season starting. Volunteers must be First Aid and CPR certified. They must sign the authorization for a background check. They must attend the pre-season coaches meeting and the pre-5k coaches meeting. They must be available for all sessions, 5k and awards ceremonies.
