To improve the lives of people in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties by working together to share community resources.

History

Char-Em United Way has been part of the community for over 50 years. It was created in 1995 as the merger of United Way of Emmet County, United Way of Charlevoix and East Jordan, and Boyne Area United Way. These were preceded by a number of local Community Chests.

Community Impact

Char-Em United Way funds programs that demonstrate outcomes that align with our community impact goals of: meeting urgent and basic needs; improving financial stability; promoting health and wellness; increasing independence and self-sufficiency; and helping youth succeed. Throughout the year Char-Em United Way takes part in special projects including Day of Caring, Stuff the Bus, Project Connect, and distribution of the FamilyWize prescription discount cards. Char-Em United Way is also involved in developing community initiatives such as Volunteer Connections, 2-1-1, and public transportation.

About Volunteer Connections

Mission and Purpose

The intent of Volunteer Connections is to serve the volunteer needs of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, by providing additional resources for volunteer recruitment, recognition, and management.

The purpose of Volunteer Connections is to promote and increase volunteerism in our two county area. Volunteer Connections will assist organizations in maximizing their utilization of volunteers while assisting community members in finding meaningful volunteer opportunities.

The Need for Volunteer Connections

The need for Volunteer Connections came about after a needs assessment revealed that Charlevoix and Emmet Counties residents want to volunteer in their community but aren't always sure how to begin. Also with deep buget cuts, non-profit agencies are in need of volunteer power more than ever.  Char-Em United Way developed Volunteer Connections as a volunteer coordination system to help volunteers find opportunities that align with their availability, skills, interests, and passion. When volunteers are able to spend their valuable time at an organization, the organization is able to strech its resources to the community a little bit further.
