Cleghorn Neighborhood Center
| Last updated on January 9, 2012 |
The United Neighbors of Cleghorn The United Neighbors of Cleghorn first met as a working group in 1968 and defined as their mission the social, economic, physical, and recreational development of the Cleghorn Section of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Over the past three decades, this group has evolved into the Ward 2 Cleghorn Neighborhood Association. In recent years, the Association has had resurgence in activity and membership and continues to meet regularly. One notable accomplishment of the association is their incorporation of the Cleghorn Neighborhood Center. The Center adopted the association's mission and has achieved their goals thorough the implementation of a number of programs; from the after school programs for area children to Educational opportunities for adults. The Cleghorn Neghborhood Center is governed by the residents of the Neighborhood. Anyone over the age of 14, who lives, works, or owns property in Cleghorn is eligible for membership in the organization at no charge. In addition, the Executive Board provides guidance and direction to the organization. This Board is comprised of the officers and other members of various committees and meets monthly. The Cleghorn Community The Cleghorn neighborhood, bounded by Oak Hill Road to the west, Pratt Road to the south, Rollstone Hill to the east, including Leighton and Foster, and River Street to the North, is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Fitchburg. According to 2000 census data, the total population rate for the area is 3,258, which is almost 10% of the City's population of 39,102. Yet the area defined as Cleghorn is only .22 square miles, less than 1% of the total area of Fitchburg (28.1 square miles), There are only 1355 square feet for every person in Cleghorn, compared to 177143 square feet per person in Fitchburg. Although Cleghorn was originally settled by French Canadians, recent history has seen it become an ethnically diverse neighborhood.
