Habitat For Humanity Of The Chesapeake
| Last updated on January 31, 2013 |
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake works with people of all faiths and backgrounds to provide simple, decent, affordable homes for families in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore region. Partner families, volunteers, and staff working together have built more than 288 houses to revitalize neighborhoods, pursuing its vision and mission to eliminate poverty housing in the region. We are also honored to enjoy a 4-Star rating (the highest rating possible) with Charity Navigator, America's largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of nonprofits and charities. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake operates an affordable homeownership program headquartered at 3741 Commerce Drive, Suite 309, Baltimore, Maryland 21227 and two ReStore locations operating at 505 Kane Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21224 and 8101 Ft. Smallwood Rd. Pasadena, MD 21226. Both the affiliate and ReStores support the goal of eliminating poverty housing and making adequate housing a matter of conscience and action.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is a non-profit housing developer that works in partnership with people in need to build simple, decent and affordable houses. Houses are sold with no interest mortgages to qualified homebuyers who earn 25%-50% of the area median income and live in current conditions of need. Future homeowners contribute 350 hours of "sweat equity" primarily working on Habitat construction sites alongside other community volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake's ReStores generate revenue that will support the HFHC's affiliate through the sale of donated building materials and home improvement items. The ReStore (known as a discount home improvement center) is intended to create self-sustaining income streams to help support operating costs and increase Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake’s building capacity. The ReStore also facilitates recycling, minimizing landfill waste, and providing low-cost home improvement items.
History:
A local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake has rehabilitated more than 288 homes throughout Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County since its inception in 1983. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake used to be two separate affiliates with one serving Anne Arundel County and the other serving Baltimore City and County. Today, the thriving merged affiliate serves Anne Arundel county and the Baltimore region. The two affiliates officially merged on July 1, 2009.
