Description:
St. Francis Neighborhood Center is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), community based organization in the Reservoir Hill area of Baltimore. Founded in 1963 as an outreach center for two local churches, the Center was incorporated in 1972 as a neighborhood nonprofit corporation, independent of any church affiliation. Since its inception, the Center has served as a resource and catalyst for improving the lives of those in Reservoir Hill, and making Baltimore a better place. Our programs create an approach that builds self-esteem, personal strength, academic, emotional, interpersonal, social, and community development that work to address complex challenges in an effort to break through the cycles of urban poverty.
St. Francis Neighborhood Center offers The Power Project youth development program, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, personal counseling, community mediation, Peace Patrol walks, a brand new Free Community Book Store, Computer Lab, potluck dinners, and the annual Reservoir Hill Festival & Resource Fair. In an average month, we serve over 300 adults, youth, and families. All of our current programs, services, and events are free to the public.
History:
The Saint Francis Neighborhood Center was founded in 1963 in the Reservoir Hill area of Baltimore City, as an outreach of two local churches. With the help of seminarians, social workers, and community activists, Saint Francis Neighborhood Center was born. When incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1972, the Center became an independent entity and has operated as such ever since.
St. Francis Neighborhood Center has been the only enduring institution to serve this large and diverse community since the riots of 1968. Due to its unwavering dedication, the Center has become an iconic presence within the Reservoir Hill community.
We build bridges, gently educate, and try to create a more just and salutary future. We strive to build relationships within the community and between residents to strengthen the neighborhood and ensure its success for the future. By investing in physical and human capital, we strive to make a better neighborhood for all residents.
