Also, the Settlement serves as the lead agency for the Broadway Collaborative, a group of neighborhood schools, nonprofits, businesses, health care organizations, churches, government entities and individuals that come together to best serve the needs of families in the community making sure to minimize duplication of service.
History:
University Settlement is a nonprofit social service agency located in the North Broadway/Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland. The Settlement has a distinguished history. Founded in 1926 by Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University), the Settlement assisted Eastern Europeans coming to Cleveland to work in the factories of what is now known as Slavic Village. The staff and volunteers focused on helping immigrants master the English language, find a home, and acculturate to American life. Over the decades, the community’s needs changed as more and more Cleveland residents moved to the suburbs. The Settlement’s “community” is comprised of residents living primarily within the Broadway Avenue/Slavic Village area. Today, the majority of neighborhood residents are the working poor and the elderly. Twenty-eight percent of residents are living at or below the poverty level – more than the City of Cleveland as a whole. Thus, the focus of the Settlement has changed dramatically during its nearly 90 years of existence.
