Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on August 24, 2011 |
Built in 1976 the Harriet Tubman House is a landmark at the corner of Massachusetts and Columbus Avenues. It was the first major commission for Don Stull – then, one of only a dozen African-American architects in the nation - who won awards for the Tubman House. The Harriet Tubman House is home to adult programming and administrative offices for USES. The South End House is a historic building that has become home to USES youth programs. The Children's Friend Society built the South End House at 48 Rutland Street in 1840 as a home for orphaned children. USES' connection to that site began in the early 1900s. A wide variety of settlement house programs and services have operated out of the facility since that time. Today the South End House is fully inhabited, bursting with children of all ages and alive with activity from morning to night. The Children's Art Centre (CAC) was built in 1918 at 36 Rutland Street. The building was designed by Alexander Emerson, and the first president of the CAC was the renowned architect, Ralph Adams Cram. The Children's Art Centre is a special neighborhood gathering place where residents of all ages explore their creativity under the guidance of experienced practicing artists. The Operations & Facilities volunteer will work directly with the Facilities Manager and will learn about many aspects of building operations and facilities such as: event set-up and breakdown, security, and working with outside contractors such as electricians, plumbers, HVAC specialists, and others. This is a terrific learning opportunity for an engineering professional or major, a facilities management professional or major, or for any professional or major interested in buildings and management.
Good basic computer skills required as well as a high level of energy, good organizational ability, and good interpersonal skills. This opportunity is sponsored by: United South End Settlements

Overall Experience

It was great

I volunteered at a high school in Brookline.I don't have an agency. I found this school through my University to gain an experience, and it was a good experience with 2nd graders. posted by mercan4 on May 16, 2003 |
