Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is seeking energetic individuals with a commitment to adult literacy to serve on the LVM Board of Directors. LVM, a nonprofit organization established in 1972, trains volunteers to provide free, confidential and individualized tutoring to adults in basic reading and writing, and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). LVM is the leading volunteer literacy organization in the state, serving nearly 1000 adults across Massachusetts. LVM's current organizational challenge is to create and implement a comprehensive fundraising and communications strategy to enable the organization to grow in response to community need. Ideal candidates to the Board must understand nonprofit governance and be committed to making LVM one of the candidate's top priorities for philanthropy and community involvement, including a personal annual donation within the candidate's financial means. LVM is especially seeking individuals with expertise in fundraising, philanthropy, law, public relations and marketing who have the time, commitment and energy to actively participate as a Board member. Qualified candidates with other skills will also be considered. Currently, initial terms are for two years. Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be sensitive to the struggles of LVM's adult learners and to volunteers, and be able to work effectively as part of a team. Prior experience on a non-profit board of directors is advantageous. The LVM Board of Directors' principal responsibilities are to: 1. ensure adequate resources to carry out the organization's mission by actively participating fundraising activities; 2. provide legal, ethical and fiduciary accountability for LVM's operations; 3. promote effective organizational planning and monitor implementation of goals; 4. assist in recruiting and orienting new board members, ensuring leadership succession and assessing board performance; 5. enhance LVM's public standing, and advocate for LVM and its mission in the public arena; 6. recruit, hire and review the Executive Director, and provide the support the Executive Director needs to further the mission and goals of LVM; and 7. make an annual personal financial contribution within individual means.
