"People First" Disability Self-Advocacy Group

People First, a local self-advocacy group for people with disabilities, is currently looking for new advisors to support the group and help achieve their goals.  People First's vision is to simply "have a life like yours" in the community where people learn to speak up and advocate for themselves and their rights.  People First is looking for a person who cares about their issues and causes, is comfortable around people with disabilities, is dedicated and committed, who is a good listener, and who can help them run things instead of running things for them.  The time commitment includes one 2-3 hour monthly meeting, and 2-3 hours per month for activities outside regular meetings.

The best way to get to know about what an advisor does is to come to a meeting.  People First meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at Columbia Baptist Church in Room 142, at the corner of Columbia and North Washington Streets in Falls Church.  Next meeting is October 6th, 2005.  Officers meet at 6:00 pm and the general meeting is at 7:00 pm.  If you would like to join or if you have questions about being an advisor, please call David Young, the President of People First, at 703-256-5462, 703-509-5750 (cell) or daveyoung@yahoo.com.
