
| The Visitor Information Unit at the Smithsonian Institution relies on a corps of over 500 volunteers who staff museum information desks located in one of the Smithsonian museums on or near the National Mall or who staff central telephone information lines located in the Smithsonian Castle. Volunteers in both settings respond primarily to visitor inquiries about Smithsonian museums, exhibitions, programs and activities, as well as general inquiries about other tourist sites around Washington D.C. Weekday volunteers serve a minimum of 3 1/2 hours (9:30 am to 1 pm or 12:30 to 4 pm) one morning or afternoon a week. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to at least one year of service; have a desire to serve the public; satisfactory completion of 5 classroom sessions and museum orientation tours. Fluency in English is required and other language skills are welcomed. Currently volunteer positions are only available Monday through Friday.
