As the first wave of the Baby Boomer generation starts to retire, the possibilities for their increased community involvement are endless. There are more than 60 million Americans over age 50 today -- a number that will increase by more than 50% in the next 25 years. Never before have so many people had so much knowledge--and will have so much time to use it. A recent study by the Corporation for National and Community Service revealed that Virginia had the fifth-highest rate of Baby Boomer volunteers and the sixth-highest median number of Baby Boomer volunteer hours among states in its region (Volunteering in America: 2007 State Trends and Rankings in Civic Life ). This bodes well for Arlington's new "Flourishing after 50" initiative, sponsored by the Office of Senior Adult Programs. Background on Flourishing after 50: Arlington County's Office of Senior Adult Programs (OSAP) is partnering with the Volunteer Office, Employment Center, RSVP, Senior Navigator and others in planning ways to encourage people over 50 to "get engaged all over again". Volunteer opportunities, employment ideas and retirement seminars will be components of this exciting community-wide initiative. Co-chairs of the steering committee are Dr. Arthur Gosling, former Arlington Superintendent of Schools, and Susan Gardiner, life counselor and leader of groups focusing on developing creative talents and serving the community.
