Volunteer Opportunity - Adult Mentors

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Friends of Guest House needs caring, dedicated volunteers who will assist women who have recently been incarcerated for non-violent offenses. Mentors meet one on one with residents of Guest House to help with life plans, resumes, job searches, housing search among other issues. These women need support and guidance to renter society in a positive way. Mentors have been found to be a key to this reentry process. Mentoring has also been found to be very rewarding to the mentor as well as the mentee. Friends of Guest also has a mentoring program in connection with the Arlington Jail. Mentors are matched with selected women for one year, beginning with one month before they leave the Detention Center and continue for their three-month stay at Guest House through the duration of a year. Mentors assist women in learning how to be productive members of society by working, attending school, refining communication and life styles and living in acceptable housing. These women need good role models, excellent listeners and a supportive environment.
Volunteers may mentor in at the Friends of Guest House facility in Alexandria or in the Arlington Jail or both.

Training is provided by Friends of Guest House. The next volunteer/mentor training is May 13th. We ask potential volunteers to fill out an application before the training and a background check is also required. If you are interested in becoming a mentor in the Arlington Detention Center, mentors must also go through the Detention Center's training which is done once every two months.

Friends of Guest House is located on the corner of East Luray Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria. Luray Avenue is between Mt. Vernon Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue. From Arlington, one can take Washington Blvd to Ridge Road (Ridge Road turns into Mt. Vernon ave. at Glebe Road). Continue on Mt.Vernon Ave to Commonwealth ave. Make a right turn at Commonwealth and continue to Luray Avenue.
