Help The Appalachian Trail - (Create Your Own Group Event) Opportunities for Children (Ages 5-12) Group Opportunities Weekday Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 26, 2011

Volunteer groups are needed to pull, uproot, and cut invasive exotic plants. Invasives threaten to squeeze out our native plants and trees. Associated wildlife and whole ecosystems are being harmed. You can learn about both native and invasive plants and truly make a difference in protecting the environment. Groups find that these projects increase their esprit de corps.

Service projects can be two-to-eight hours long or as part of an on-going commitment. Groups of 6-to-40 people are excellent. Appropriate ages are 11-through-75 years of age.

With a brief phone call with the Volunteer Leader, you can set up an event for your group in an area of your choice along the Appalachian Trail in Northern Virginia. You'll be making a big difference in protecting our native environment.

Projects focus on invasives such as garlic mustard, mullein, mile-a-minute vine, autumn olive, wineberry, Oriental bittersweet, Japanese barberry, multiflora rose, and others. Controlling invaders is done by uprooting or cutting. Cutting is done with loppers and hand saws which we provide.

Good times of the year to work are typically March – November, any day of the week, open to negotiation of available staffing and equipment. Bring or wear a hat, long pants, long sleeves, shoes/boots & socks, and something to eat and drink.

Contact: Short-term Volunteer Leader, NPS Mid-Atlantic Exotic Plant Management Team; (540) 421-4577.

Volunteers should be able to walk on their own on trail and off-trail in forested areas.
