Organization - ESL & Immigrant Ministries - VA - Arlington

We believe that a way in which we can practically serve our neighbors in a community where one in four homes speaks a language other than English is to teach English. We believe that by teaching English as a second language we are offering "new Americans" a practical skill that will empower them to be full participants in their communities and in society.

Description:
We are a non-profit organization devoted to teaching English as a second language. Classes are offered 2 times a year for 10 - 12 weeks at 16 locations throughout Northern Virginia. Our greatest need is for volunteers willing to teach English in small classroom settings. Volunteer teachers commit to teaching one 2-hour class a week. There are, however, a variety of other volunteer assignments available for those who do not wish to teach.

History:
ESL & Immigrant Ministries began in 1989 in the basement of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, located in Arlington, VA, with 3 teachers and 25 students.

Today, ESL & Immigrant Ministries is a 501(c)(3) corporation and has grown to include 16 locations in Northern Virginia with enrollments totaling 2000 students and 300 volunteers.
