Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic's (PHMA) mission is to offer high-quality treatment to individuals and their families, regardless of their economic status, who are suffering from the effects of substance abuse.

Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, with headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, whose purpose is to provide quality substance abuse treatment programs to adults, adolescents and mothers with their children. PHMA currently operates 16 programs accredited by CARF, the national commission for the accreditation of residential facilities. We offer a variety of substance abuse programs including residential, outpatient, transitional housing and prevention services throughout Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

PHMA is directed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Board members from throughout metropolitan D.C. provide expertise, wisdom and financial support. PHMA’s programs are managed by its corporate staff, which has been ably led by Senior Vice President and Regional Director Deborah Simpson Taylor, R.N., C.D since 1989. PHMA employs nearly 150 qualified professionals, and benefits from the assistance of volunteers, including former clients from throughout the local community. Volunteers assist with special events such as fundraisers, program graduations and other events. Interns from local colleges and universities, including Georgetown, Howard and George Mason Universities, the University of Maryland and Northern Virginia Community College, offer time to the organization while gaining experience in their field.

PHMA operates a variety of programs, including outpatient, residential, transitional living and preventative services throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

A brief description of our programs follows:

PHMA Counseling Center: An outpatient counseling program for adolescents and adults in Arlington, VA. The program offers individual counseling, intensive outpatient treatment, family groups, and comprehensive assessments. PHMA CC has recently added a Partial Hospitalization Program (day treatment) for adults and the Second Chance Program for Arlington adolescents.

Girls and Boys Recovery Lodges: This program is designed for adolescents and is located in Arlington County, Virginia. GRL/BRL provide young people (ages 13-17) the opportunity to address their substance abuse issues in a nurturing, highly structured program that integrates education, socialization, recreation and family components. Girls and boys have separate campuses and the program can host up to 12 boys and 8 girls at our recently relocated campuses in Arlington.

The Phoenix Program: A 68-bed residential substance abuse treatment program for adult men. Phoenix provides intermediate (up to 90 days) rehabilitation for adult alcohol and/or drug-dependent men. Located in Arlington, VA.

Nuevo Dia: Housed in the same facility and closely linked to Phoenix, Nuevo Dia is a Spanish-language program, offering culturally-appropriate residential treatment for monolingual Hispanic men, using bilingual staff.

Demeter House: A 20-bed, residential program in Arlington, VA, for women, pregnant women and mothers who can bring up to two children with them to treatment. In addition to addiction counseling, we provide child care, parenting, nutrition and health education.

Re-Entry Program: A transitional housing program for male substance abusers who have completed primary treatment, located in Arlington, VA.

Independence House: Similar to Re-Entry (except that it also serves adult women and only Arlington residents), a 16-bed transitional housing program in Arlington, VA, that specifically serves homeless adult substance abusers.

History:
Established in the early 1960s to meet the needs of alcoholic men in the Arlington community, PHMA has a long history of addressing the difficulties faced by individuals with addiction problems who have no other place to turn. Over the ensuing decades, the treatment needs of these individuals have evolved, and PHMA has expanded to ensure quality treatment to a variety of target populations. We offer a unique residential program in which mothers can bring their children and one of the only non-hospital-based residential treatment programs for adolescents in Virginia. We also offer a culturally-appropriate residential substance abuse treatment to Spanish-speaking clients, making us the sole provider of such services in the area. As a nonprofit provider of these services, PHMA’s mission is to offer its programs in a cost-efficient manner, allowing for maximum accessibility.
