The Reading Connection improves the lives of at-risk kids and families in metro Washington, DC, by using the magic of books to inspire a passion to learn.

Teams of volunteers work weekly with children in 13 housing crisis sites. Five of these sites are in Arlington, three are in Alexandria, two in DC, two in Fairfax County and one in Bethesda. TRC holds bi-monthly orientations for new volunteers.

The Reading Connection was founded in 1989 by Arlington Public School teachers, who noticed children from shelters in their classrooms. They began reading to the children in the shelters whenever they could. TRC became incorporated as a 501c(3) organization in 1992, and now serves children in 13 sites.
