The Reading Connection gives children in housing crisis the foundation for a lifelong love of reading by offering read-aloud experiences that share stories and reading-related activities. TRC distributes new books to these children so they begin to see themselves as readers and achievers.
Description:
Teams of volunteers work weekly with children in 12 housing crisis sites. Five of these sites are in Arlington, three are in Alexandria, two in DC and two in Fairfax County. TRC holds monthly orientations for new volunteers.
History:
The Reading Connection was founded in 1989 by Arlington Public School teachers, who noticed children from shelters in their classrooms. They began reading to the children in the shelters whenever they could. TRC became incorporated as a 501c(3) organization in 1992, and now serves children in 12 sites.
