The mission of Northern Virginia Family Service is to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life and to promote community cooperation and support in responding to family needs.

Established in 1924, Northern Virginia Family Service is a private, non-profit community service resource dedicated to helping individuals and families find new paths to self-reliance and brighter futures. Each year, NVFS helps nearly 33,000 people find affordable housing, counseling and child care; access low-cost medical and dental services; utilize foster and respite care; participate in job training; benefit from trauma recovery; and more.

History:
Originally established in 1924 by volunteers in Alexandria, NVFS is in our Northern Virginia communities to help people in need. Those first volunteers in Alexandria noticed that poor children in their community had no coats and their families had no coal to heat their homes. They addressed those basic, but critically important, needs.

Eighty-five years later, NVFS continues to address the needs of many communities in our region - over 20,000 individuals and families each year - with a wide range of programs designed to deal with the current problems of today. As these needs emerge and change over time, NVFS’ programs also adapt to respond to what is needed – when it is required.
