Description:
Arlington Civitan Club (Civitan Club of Arlington, Virginia, Inc.) is club number 0410 chartered by Civitan International (www.civitan.org) which is located and working in 27 countries around the World and has some 25,000 members. Each local club (like Arlington Civitan) selects their own projects for helping their local community provide good community service to its citizens.
History:
Arlington Civitan was chartered on December 18, 1940 by Civitan International - to operate in northern Virginia to perform those projects enumerated by paragraphs 1 & 2 above. From the beginning "fund-raising" was primarily by selling Claxton fruit cakes (Claxton of Georgia) during the holiday season to raise funds to grant to worthy projects and share revenue with Civitan International. In 1986, Arlington Civitan responded to the Arlington County Board of Supervisors to find a community service organization to administer and provide a community garage sale located (in the then new) I-66 parking garage at N. Quincy & N 15th Street in Arlington. An written agreement was made and it continues in the 23rd year of operations - on the first Saturday - April through November. The Arlington County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is the liaison for these events. Arlington Civitan has been a member of the Inter-Service Club Council (ISCC) of Arlington County and has been a participating member - since shortly after ISCC's inception (that occurred also in 1940). Arlington Civitan grants between $20,000-25,000 per fiscal year (Oct 1 - Sept 30) to grantees who operate in northern Virginia to improve life's conditions for those who are intellectually challenged in our community; and to the Civitan International Research Center (Birmingham, AL) and to students of the local high schools. In 2008, VDOT (Virginia Dept of Transportation) granted the County of Arlington permission to post large signs on the major routes leading to the sale location - and these signs have helped vendors and Customers alike find the sale location near the Arlington County Public School parking garage. More volunteers are needed to help provide a diverse range of volunteer service to the Arlington community and to the non-profits that need the help.
